SHORTNAME: FKUR

LOCATION: Willich Diisseldorf Germany

PROJECT ROLE: COMPOUND FILM MANUFACTURER

FKUR is a leading producer of customized bioplastics in Europe and is sited in Germany. FKUR focus on materials research and development of bioplastics. The company was founded in 2003 in close cooperation with Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT (Germany), which is the largest organization for applied research in Europe. ln addition, since 2009 FKUR has a USA subsidiary “FKuR Plastics Corp.” in Texas.

FKuR has an extensive network of collaboration, in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT (Oberhausen) they both have developed a wide range of biodegradable plastics primarily made from natural resource materials. They offer a broad range of biobased and compostable resins. FKuR resins can be converted using conventional plastic processing machines.

Julian Schmeling M.Eng. He studied plastics processing at the University of Applied Sciences in Darmstadt, Germany. He joined the FKuR applications technology team in 2010, mainly focusing on flexible film applications. Since July 2015 he is responsible for research and development at FKuR.

Carsten Niermann M.Sc. He studied plastics and textile technology at RWTH Aachen University in Aachen, Germany. He completed different internships within the plastic industry and worked a student job at the Institute of Plastics Processing at RWTH Aachen. He joined the applications technology team at FKuR in April 2015, where he is focusing on developing bioplastic compounds for injection moulding applications.

Birgit von Hansen, Deg.-lng. (FH). She studied Process Engineering at the Niederrhein University of Applied Science. In 1997 she joined former FKuR – Forschungsinstitut Kunststoff und Recycling, Willich Germany, as a student and worked in the field of material testing. She prepared her diploma thesis about the use of nanoclays in bioplastics at FKuR. Since then, she is working as project engineer, where her main field of work is the Research & Development and applications technology for compounding, flexible films and bio-based polyethylene.

David Bertomeu M.Sc. He studied Materials Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Valencia. Then, he worked in the Materials Technology Institute, where he was researching lines: Biodegradable composites. Research, development and implementation in the field of application of biodegradable materials, their characterization and property expression in short and long term in a particular product mean time before failure. At FKuR Kunststoff GmbH in 2012. He works in the applications technology department.
